Entrevista: Fear of Tigers

Publicada por Biffy On 16:42

.
Opus Sound (OS): Hi, Fear of Tigers. First of all, tell us a bit about yourself and about your musical background.

Fear of Tigers (FoT): Hi Opus Sound! Well I’m a 30 year old guy who lives in London and I’ve been writing music in one way or another since I was a kid. I used to be a DJ and although I still do a bit [of] that my main thing is writing and producing these days.

OS: Who are your main influences, those who really define your sound and the goal you want to achieve with and in your music?

FoT:
My influences are right across the board from classical music through to dubstep but I don’t think I’d define my sound by any of them. There’s no one I want to copy, I really just want to tread my own path. If I do set out to copy people it never really works so I just tend to go with whatever comes most easily. Although [there are], of course, all sorts of things that creep in from other records that I love.

OS: Do you fear cats as well, or is it just tigers?

FoT: I love cats! I have two in fact. One was a stray we found in the garden, she turned out to be pregnant and ended up giving birth to two kittens in our living room. We gave one to a friend and decided to keep the other one.

OS: What about your myspace layout? There seems to be a severe fetish for Guinea pigs...

FoT: Ah yes! Well in the absence of a cool logo I went with the guinea-man-pig you see now. Some people love it, some hate it and some think it’s really weird. I just think it’s quite funny and hopefully shows that I’m not too serious.

OS: There are progressively more artists with a sound inspired in the 80's and other retro stuff, just like yourself. Do you think you have what it takes to stand out of the crowd? What do you think is your music's pièce de résistance, how do you try to make it sound unique?

FoT: It’s a funny one. I never set out to make tracks that are particularly 80s sounding but often that’s how they are perceived. I think in the 80s, people weren’t scared to experiment with electronics and at the same time were very melodic. Melody and harmony are really at the heart of what I do so I understand if people think it sounds a bit 80s and even a bit flattered but it’s really not what I’m aiming at. I think in my music you’ll hopefully also hear some other elements too maybe some 90s ones, some trance, some indie and even some classical. I really don’t know what’s unique about my music. Maybe nothing, but I’d hope that if someone heard one of my remixes or a new track of mine they’d not heard before, they’d identify it as me.

OS: You've given your first album for free (thanks, by the way, because it's awsome!). That surely has given you a lot of publicity, at least around the blogosphere. Why did you come up with that decision?

FoT: Well, I foolishly said earlier in the year that I’d put an album out. People kept reminding me about it and I really couldn’t go back on my word. Putting it out on a label would have taken forever where as I just wanted to put it out there and move on. I’m really glad I did though and I can’t wait to start the next one!

OS: Cossus Snufsigalonica sounds like a disease name... Will it be the next pandemic after H1N1?

FoT: Ha ha! I hope not. Maybe it would turn people into guinea pigs! There is some meaning to the name that I’m reluctant to give away. It certainly has a Latin influence.

OS: The vocals on your album, are they samples or did you invite singers? Some of them seem familiar, though...

FoT: Well yes there are samples on the album. The most notable from Corona’s Rhythm of the Night. Some of the tracks are friends of mine or projects I’ve been involved in.

OS:
Pippi Longstrump... Hum... Another fetish?!

FoT: I came across Pippi Longstrump in my Swedish class and loved everything about her. I just had to name a track after her wonderful adventures! It also doubles up as just being a weird name for people who haven’t heard of her.

OS: Two words: "blogs" and "web". Are they helpfull tools for artists (even if in a passive kinda way) or do they harm more than they help?

FoT: Yes very much so. I love the fact so many people are making and releasing music online. It’s so direct and exciting. When I was growing up all the producers used to press up records and sell them to the record shops and I was always a bit gutted I missed out on that. But just recently I’ve realised how lucky we actually are, even if there’s not much money in it.

OS: You've already made some remixes. Which one gave you more pleasure making?

FoT:
I loved doing the Infadels ‘Love Like Semtex’ that was really fun. Likewise ‘Dawn of the Dead’ by Does It Offend You Yeah, was done in less than a day. On the other hand the Sound of Arrows remix was quite hard to do. I actually made two remixes of that track. The first one I rejected.

OS: Please, do tell us about your relationship with The Sound of Arrows! Is it true they take care of your cat when you're off?

FoT: Yes, it is indeed true! They usually look after my house when I’m away. Which is really nice for me to know someone is there looking after the cats, watering the plants and living in the place. I first met them when they moved to London earlier in the year and feel lucky enough to call Stefan and Oskar friends now.

OS: Why haven't you guys teamed up?

FoT: Well actually there might be a track but I don’t want to say too much about it in case it all goes wrong!

OS: What are you currently working on?

FoT: I’ve got two more remixes to do before Christmas and then I think I’m going to start experimenting with some new sounds and styles. I’d love to do a more ambient album or even a side project of something completely different.

OS: Name three albums you're listening to at the moment.

FoT: Michael Nyman - "Man on Wire", Richard Hawley – "Truelove’s Gutter", Brian Eno – "Here Come The Warm Jets"

OS: Any chance you're visiting Portugal soon?

FoT: I’d love to! I almost came for a holiday last year to a little village near Porto but it fell through at the last moment so we went to a small town in the mountains called Lanjaron. Maybe this year we’ll take a little holiday!
.
OS: Thanks a lot, Ben, for answering the questions and for your kindness. Opus Sound hopes you have a great 2010, with lots of success and the best of luck! Keep up the awsome work!
